“Arguably the most popular boy band in Tanzania, one of the finest in East Africa before fame, fortune and personal interests invaded their paradise leading to their split.”
Founded by Bongo business man Mkubwa Fella bringing together Dogo Aslay who was already established and successful, Enock Bella, Beka flavour and Maromboso gave rise to the East Africa’s most dominant band after TMK Wanauume Family faded away. Their ascendancy in 2015 after their hit single Nitakupwelepweta propelled them to stardom as they released hit after hit dominating the airwaves within a short period of time as their fame spread like wildfire ,earning them a couple of collabos a clear indication that they were evidently going places.
Their hit making success is attributed to the quartet distinct individual talents the vocal prowess of Aslay, Enock Bella’s deep bass voice , Maromboso’s songwriting attributes and Beka flavour dance choreography made them the most loved boy band in East Africa.
Tanzania being the music powerhouse in the region makes music a competitive exploit thus for one to rise above the rest cutting a niche for themselves let alone staying relevant is a mammoth task requiring a lot of personal sacrifices. On the contrary, Yamoto band swiftly rose to stardom little is known about the past musical exploits of the quartet save for Aslay. What really stood out though, was the fact that they were made for each other. It almost seemed like none would survive musically without the other. Their chemistry both in the songs and on-stage seemed to work out really well for the band as each member brought in a different flavor to the group, therefore changing the face of modern day Bongo music.
Many bands struggle to hold together once money, fame and personal interests take precedent over the group’s overall interest as each member thinks he is the most valuable, Yamoto band is no exception. As fate would have it, the band’s survival prospects hit the bottom end mid-2017 when Aslay went solo releasing his single solo, Kida. This didn’t go down well with the trio who felt the move was selfish.
Numerous reasons are attributed to the split up with some, especially the group financier, Mkubwa fella claiming the band was running out of clients as many customers preferred solo artists to groups. He said the market was changing and customers were avoiding the band due to the charges they were demanding for shows. He added that the trio were free to do their own solo releases, saying it would not do the group any harm as they were still performing together. He was quick to absolve Aslay of the blame on split up stating that it was financially wise for each artiste to earn from their own sweat.
Not so long after the group broke up it was evident that one Aslay was surging and picking up quicker than his former band mates a clear indication he had a clear, planned and well calculated exit plan. The split up seemed to be working in his favor as he overshadowed the rest releasing hit after hit from singles such as Mhudumu, Natamba, Pusha, likizo, Nibebe and Hauna to Collabos such as Usilitie Doa featuring legendary Taarab songstress Khadija Kopa. Having an already established fan base which he built during his heydays that continues to grow day in day out has made him to be viewed as the groups backbone as his songs receiving massive airplay and YouTube viewership in their millions a clear indication he can thrive on his own as fellow band members struggle to pick up the pieces of the breakup a year later.
Although pursuing solo careers with Beka flavor changing his management releasing singles such as Kibenten, Sikinai, Sarafina, Libebe, Naona Kiza and collabos such as Asali featuring Chemical he is the second most successful ; Maromboso joined Diamond Platinumz’s Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) label releasing two singles Watakubali and Nimekuzoea plus being featured in WCB all-star Zilipendwa hit whereas Enock Bella seems to be the greatest loser as he struggles with his solos such as Sauda, Nitazoea and Ngoja Kidogo which aren’t receiving massive airplays and YouTube viewership though he was recently signed up by a Burundi based recording label.
The transition hasn’t been smooth with Beka Flavour rubbing shoulders severally with Aslay a clear indication of open sibling rivalry vowing not to allow overshadow the rest of them since he was not giving them space to release their songs. He went ahead to release Libebe after the split up and even set up a new management. Aslay on the other hand tags Enock Bella during his shows as the two perform Yamoto band songs a clear indication that he was the band.
